Content Creation

Generating the words and other materials you need to communicate your brand’s story.

What is content creation?

Content creation is the process of developing information to communicate your brand’s message. In our experience, this is the biggest task overlooked in the development of any new digital product. Where your brand identity works to leave a visual impression on your audience, your content works to connect with them by driving them forward to take an action (‘click the next page’, ‘buy that dress’, ‘subscribe to our newsletter’, ‘book our service’, etc). Some content tells stories through words (copywriting), others through visuals (photography, video).

Frequently asked questions

When might my business need a content creator?

Thinking about content for your website? Writing a blog? Sending out a monthly newsletter? Scratching your head at at how to keep up with consistent content for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter? Looking for images to accompany your message?
While some might be thrilled at the idea of jumping into writing copy or taking and sourcing photos – it can be an understandably overwhelming and daunting task for others. Sitting down to write pages and pages of content that considers the medium, clearly communicates your brand message, entices your audience and is search engine optimised (SEO) is no mean feat! So if you’re not quite sure where to start, a content creator is a great investment.

What is the importance of hiring a professional content creator vs DIY when preparing content for a website?

If you’re lucky enough to have a natural writer on staff, or extensive content to hand — then you’re likely to hit the ground running. But even with this kind of head start, getting a professional writer in (known in marketing terms as a ‘copywriter’) can be the difference between a well-ranking site and one that flounders on the back pages of a Google search. Google takes into account a variety of factors when determining the ranking of a website, and the copy on your website is a big part of this.

What do I need to think about with images?

Photography might be a fun hobby, but creating or sourcing high-quality, professional images is a very different proposition. A professional content creator can help your website shine by ensuring your images work together as a set, are appropriately licensed, and have a tone and style that is consistent with your brand identity.

Our Content Creation Process

Stage 1: Discovery

We begin by getting a good understanding of your business and objectives to define the purpose of your required content. If we’re working with you on a website, we’ll collaborate on a site map of required pages. If we’re focused on other digital products (blogs, social media posts, etc.), we’ll work with you on a content plan.

Stage 2: Content

This is where we produce the content and information that your website or other digital product is going to hold. This can include copywriting, photography and/or video.

Stage 3: Presentation

We present the content in situ – showing your web content within a black and white wireframe and other mocked-up digital products so you can get a clear vision of how your content will look and feel when you’re ready to launch.

Stage 4: Implementation

And now for the fun part! This is where we roll-out your new content in the real world. We’ll be with you as you roll out your content in print, on the web or on social channels.

About Shorthand

A design studio

Shorthand is a design studio based in Newcastle, Australia. We blend expertise in brand, digital and graphic design to help businesses define and communicate their brand. Our name, taken from the classic writing-system of symbolic abbreviation, represents the fundamentals of our work – distilling the essence of a brand and expressing it visually.

Shorthand was founded by Amanda and Scott Kirkman in 2014, when the pair brought several years of experience at top creative agencies in Melbourne back home to Newcastle. We are a design studio, not an agency. We are intentionally small, favouring quality over quantity. We don’t have account managers or a sales team, so you know you will be working directly with us. We bring our big agency experience to projects of all sizes, partnering with brands from Sydney to San Francisco.
